چکیده

Supersonic ion beam formation has been observed in a geometrically expanding low-pressure inductively coupled argon plasma. It is found that the ion beam is only observed below 3 mTorr and only when the discharge is operated in inductive mode. The geometrical expansion of the plasma induces density and potential gradients leading to the ion beam formation. The ion beam energy increases with decreasing source tube radius. The results show that ion beam formation can be achieved by geometrical expansion alone and that the ion beam energy depends on the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the source and expansion region. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. Effects of the Magnetic Fields on Ion Beam Energy in a Magnetically Expanding Plasma

Effects of the magnetic-field configuration on electrostatic ion acceleration in a magnetically expanding plasma source are experimentally investigated, where an expanding plasma machine with two solenoid coils is manufactured. The field configurations can be changed by adjusting the solenoid currents. The 13.56 MHz radiofrequency power for plasma production and the argon gas pressure are maint...

Damage studies on irradiated tungsten by helium and argon ions in a plasma focus device

Damage of tungsten due to helium and argon ions of a PF device was studied. Tungsten samples were irradiated by 20 shots of the plasma focus device with argon and helium as working gases, separately. The tungsten surface was analyzed by SEM, before and after irradiation. SEM revealed dense blisters with diameters of a few hundred nanometers, on the samples which were irradiated by helium ions, ...

Detailed plasma potential measurements in a radio-frequency expanding plasma obtained from various electrostatic probes

On-axis plasma potential measurements have been made with an emissive probe in a low pressure !0.044 Pa" rf expanding plasma containing an ion beam. The beam is detected with a retarding field energy analyzer !RFEA", and is seen to disappear at high pressure !0.39 Pa". The emissive probe measurements are in very good agreement with corresponding measurements made with two separate RFEAs, and th...

Ion beam formation in a very low magnetic field expanding helicon discharge

An ion beam has been measured emerging from a low pressure 0.04 Pa helicon plasma reactor over a narrow range of magnetic field values 1 mT B0 3 mT . The presence of the ion beam occurs simultaneously with a large increase in the plasma density for the same applied magnetic field, produced using a single solenoid half the length of the m=1 rf antenna. The peak central plasma density of 1.5 1017...
